아랍영화제를 통해 국내최초 혹은 아시아 최초로 소개될 아랍영화, 함께 진행되는 강좌, 사진전 등을 통해 아랍으로 한 걸음 더 다가가는 계기가 되고, 이를 통해 보다 직접적으로 아랍문화를 체험하는 기회가 되기를 바랍니다.

2014 아랍영화제에서 상영되는 영화는 모두 8편으로 국내와 아시아지역에 처음 소개되는 작품이 대부분입니다. <오마르>는 국내 개봉되었던 하니 아부-아사드 감독의 탁월한 영화를 기억하는 많은 관객들을 위해 부산영화제에서 소개되었지만 상영작 목록에 포함하였습니다.

개막작인 <팩토리 걸>은 아랍의 대표적인 영화제인 두바이 국제영화제에서 최우수 작품상과 여우주연상을 수상한 작품입니다. 기존의 제도와 문화에 도전하는 여주인공의 당당한 모습을 또렷이 보여 줍니다. <모나리자의 미소>는 여주인공의 사랑과 이를 둘러싼 가족과 사회의 대응을 대립적으로 보여준다는 점에서 <팩토리 걸>과 유사한 서사구조를 가지고 있지만 정서적 분위기와 이야기의 결말은 사뭇 다릅니다. 다큐멘터리 <사랑은 바다에서 나를 기다리고>와 <내 안의 아버지>는 두 편 모두 보기 드물게 시적이며 자기 성찰적인 작품입니다. 단단하고 깊은 성찰을 아름다운 언어와 슬픈 정서로 화면위에 풀어 놓으며 관객을 자신들의 세계로 자연스레 끌고 가는 연출력이 섬세하고 정확합니다. 가족 내부에 잠재해있던 문제가 외부의 돌발적인상황과 충돌할 때 생기는 고통을 직시하는 <증거>, <블라인드 인터섹션>, <락 더 카스바>는 마음을 흔드는 영화들입니다. 영화 속 가족구성원들은 협력하거나 포기하고 때로는 가족을 떠나는 방식으로 상황에 대응합니다. 역설적이게도 영화 속 인물들이 가장 힘든 선택을 하는 순간 우리는 그들에게 마음을 내어줍니다.

아랍영화제의 영화들을 통해 아랍사람들 역시 우리와 마찬가지로 동시대의 보편적인 문제와 고민을 안고 지금 여기를 살고 있다는 점을 확인해보시길 바랍니다.

We have prepared 8 films for the Arab Film Festival 2014 and most of them are Asian premieres. Although it was introduced at the Busan International Film Festival, we put <Omar> on the list for those who still remember the outstanding work by director Hany Abu-Assad.

The opening film <Factory Girl> won the Best Picture and Best Actress Awards at the Dubai International Film Festival, the most renowned film festival in the Arab world. It features a confident woman who defies the existing culture and institution. <When Monaliza Smiled> is similar to <Factory Girl> in that it depicts a conflict between a woman in love and those around her, but it has a different mood and resolution. Both <My Love Awaits Me by the Sea> and <The Man Inside> are rare documentaries that are poetic and introspective. With the help of delicate and accurate directing, audiences are led into the films’ worlds, while a process of deep selfexamination through beautiful language and sorrowful sentiment takes place on the screen. <The Proof>, <Blind Intersections> and <Rock the Casbah> are deeply moving films that illustrate the way underlying family problems clash with some unexpected external circumstances. In each film, the family members deal with their situations by cooperating with one another, giving up altogether, or sometimes leaving their family behind. Yet, ironically, it is at moments when they make the most difficult decisions that they win our hearts.

I sincerely hope that through the films in the Arab Film Festival 2014, the audiences discover the Arabs share the same contemporary and universal issues with us.
