런던을 근거로 활동 중인 피아니스트 김선욱은 2006년 리즈 콩쿠르 우승자로 국제무대에 이름을 알렸다. 당시 18살이었던 김선욱은 리즈 콩쿠르 40년 역사상 최연소 우승자이자 첫 아시아 출신 우승자라는 기록을 남겼으며, 경연 결승에서 마크 엘더/할레 오케스트라와 연주했던 브람스 협주곡 1번으로 비평계의 극찬을 받았다.

동세대 연주자 중 두드러지는 행보를 보여주고 있는 그는 런던 심포니(존 엘리엇 가디너, 다니엘 하딩), 로열 콘세르트허바우 오케스트라(정명훈), 베를린 방송교향악단(마렉 야노프스키), 북독일 방송교향악단, 핀란드 방송교향악단(사카리 오라모, 앤드류 맨지, 투간 소키예프), 필하모니아 오케스트라(블라디미르 아쉬케나지, 유라이 발추하, 에드워드 가드너), 런던 필하모닉(바실리 시나이스키), 라디오 프랑스 필하모닉(정명훈), NHK심포니(칼-하인즈 스테픈), 할레 오케스트라(마크 엘더) 등 세계 주요 오케스트라의 정기연주회 협연자로 꾸준히 초청받고 있으며, 2014년에는 본머스 심포니 협연으로 BBC프롬스에 데뷔했다.

2016/17시즌 김선욱은 루가노 RTSI오케스트라, 쾰른 필하모닉, 툴루즈 캐피톨 국립교향악단 데뷔무대를 성공적으로 마무리하였으며, 2014/15시즌 상주음악가로 활동했던 본머스 심포니와는 차이콥스키 교향곡 1번을 연주할 예정이다. 리즈 콩쿠르를 시작으로 지금까지 긴밀한 관계를 이어오고 있는 마크 엘더/할레 오케스트라와는 지난 시즌 라흐마니노프 협주곡 3번으로 투어를 함께했으며, 2017년 브람스 협주곡 전곡집을 발매했다.

독주자로도 활발히 활동하고 있는 김선욱은 베를린 필하모니, 파리 필하모니, 위그모어 홀, 테아트로 콜론을 포함한 주요 콘서트홀 무대에 올랐으며, 파리 살 플레옐에서 개최되는 Piano 4 Etoiles에도 정기적으로 초청받고 있다. 프랑스 라로크 당테롱 페스티벌, 브뤼셀 클라라 페스티벌, 독일 루르 피아노 페스티벌, 런던 인터내셔널 피아노 시리즈 같은 페스티벌 역시 김선욱의 주요 활동 무대다. 한국에서는 2012년부터 2년에 걸쳐 LG아트센터를 무대로 베토벤 소나타 전곡 시리즈를 완수했고, 2014년 가을 바흐-프랑크-슈만으로 전국 리사이틀 투어를 가졌다.

2015년 가을 악첸투스(Accentus) 레이블로 베토벤 후기소나타 발트슈타인과 함머클라비어를 담은 첫 독주앨범을 출반한 김선욱은 2016년 브람스 소나타 3번 등이 수록된 두 번째 솔로 앨범을 발매한 데 이어 2017년 베토벤 소나타 비창, 월광, 열정을 담은 세 번째 독주곡집을 선보였다. 앞서 도이치 그라모폰에서 발매한 2종의 협주곡 앨범 역시 호평 받았는데, 그 중 진은숙 피아노 협주곡집은 BBC뮤직매거진상과 국제클래식음반상 수상작으로 선정되었다.

서울에서 태어난 김선욱은 3살에 피아노를 시작해 10살에 독주, 12살에 협연 데뷔 무대를 가졌다. 한국예술종합학교에서 피아노를 전공하였고, 영국 왕립음악원 지휘 석사과정을 졸업했다. 리즈 콩쿠르에 우승하기 앞서 독일 에틀링겐 국제 피아노 콩쿠르(2004), 스위스 클라라 하스킬 국제 피아노 콩쿠르(2005)에서 1등상을 수상하였다. 2013년 독일 본에 위치한 베토벤 생가 ‘베토벤 하우스’ 멘토링 프로그램 첫 수혜자로 선정된 김선욱은 베토벤 하우스 소장품을 독점으로 사용할 수 있는 자격을 취득했다.

London-based Sunwook Kim came to international recognition when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, aged just 18, becoming the competition’s youngest winner for 40 years, as well as its first Asian winner. His performance of Brahms’s Concerto No.1 with the Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder in the competition’s finals attracted unanimous praise from the press. Since then, he has established a reputation as one of the finest pianists of his generation, appearing as a concerto soloist in the subscription series of some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra (Gardiner, Harding), Concertgebouw Orchestra (Chung), Berlin Radio Symphony (Janowski), NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Finnish Radio Symphony (Oramo, Manze, Sokhiev), Philharmonia Orchestra (Ashkenazy, Valcuha, Gardner), London Philharmonic (Sinaisky), Radio-France Philharmonic (Chung), NHK Symphony (Steffens), Hallé Orchestra (Elder), and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for his BBC Proms debut in Summer 2014.

This season Sunwook will make his debut with the RTSI Orchestra in Lugano (Beethoven 3 with Vladimir Ashkenazy), the Guerzenich Orchestra in Cologne (Britten with Michae lSanderling) and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse for a performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. In 14/15 he completed a highly acclaimed residency with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and returns there this season for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1st Concerto. Since their Leeds finals together in 2006, Sunwook Kim has also enjoyed an ongoing relationship with the Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder. At the start of last season they gave a 6-concert tour together with Rachmaninov’s Concerto No.3 and recorded Brahms’s Piano Concertos No.1 & 2 for release next year on the Hallé’s own label. Other recital concerto highlights include a performance of Unsuk Chin’s Piano Concerto with the Radio-France Philharmonic at the prestigious Festival d’Automne in Paris, and debut projects with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (Schumann with Paavo Järvi), Hamburger Symphoniker (Rachmaninov 3), Opera di Roma (Beethoven 4) and Hong Kong Sinfonietta (Brahms 1).

Recitals highlights to date include regular appearances in the “Piano 4 Etoiles” series at Salle Pleyel in Paris, as well as debuts at the Wigmore Hall, the London International Piano Series (Queen Elizabeth Hall), Stockholm Konserthuset, Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, La Roque d’Antheron International Piano Festival in France, Kioi Hall in Tokyo, Symphony Hall Osaka, Brussels Klara Festival, Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Klavier-Festival Ruhr and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festspiele. In 12/13, he presented a complete cycle of the Beethoven Sonatas at the LG Arts Centre in Seoul. Future recital plans include returns to the “Piano 4 Etoiles” series at the Philharmonie in Paris and Wigmore Hall in London.

Sunwook Kim’s debut recital disc was released on the Accentus label in October 2015, featuring Beethoven’s Waldstein and Hammerklavier sonatas and was followed in January 2016 by a second Accentus recital release with Cesar Franck’s Prelude, choral et fugue and Brahms’s Sonata No.3. His discography to date includes two concerto recordings, both on Deutsche Grammophon and with the Seoul Philharmonic conducted by Myung-Whun Chung: a CD featuring Unsuk Chin’s Piano Concerto (2014) which attracted outstanding reviews and awards from BBC Music Magazine and International Classical Music Awards, and a CD featuring Beethoven’s Concerto No.5 (2013).

Born in Seoul in 1988, Sunwook Kim began the piano at the age of 3. He gave his debut recital aged just 10, and this was followed by his concerto debut two years later. He graduated from the Korean National University of Arts in February 2008, and then completed an MA in conducting at the Royal Academy of Music. Besides Leeds, international awards include the first prize at the 2004 Ettlingen Competition (Germany) and the 2005 Clara Haskil Competition (Switzerland). In 2013, Sunwook was selected by the Beethoven-Haus Bonn to become the first beneficiary of its new Mentoring Programme, a status which grants him exclusive access to the house’s unique collections and resources.
