80년대 초 시리아 국경 마을, 어린 세로는 처음으로 학교에 가게 된다. 어느 날, 쿠르드인 아이들을 든든한 범아랍 동지로 만들겠다는 목표를 가진 강압적인 교사가 부임한다. 그는 쿠르드어를 금지하고, 유대인들을 증오하도록 교육한다. 이웃의 유대인 가족과 오랜 시간 친밀하게 지내온 세로는 혼란스럽기만 하다. 단지 만화를 볼 수 있는 텔레비전을 갖는 것이 소원이었던 이 어린아이는 점점 주변 어른들의 고통을 이해해 가면서 일찍 어른이 되어간다. 감독의 유년 시절에 대한 회고적 시선을 다룬 이 영화는 현재 진행형인 시리아의 비극과 중첩되며 여전히 시의성을 가진 문제를 향한다.

In a Syrian border village, in the early 80’s, little Sero attends school for the first time. One day, a new overbearing teacher has arrived with the goal of making strapping Pan-arabic comrades out of the Kurdish children. To enable paradise to come to earth, he uses the rod to forbid the Kurdish language, orders the veneration of Assad and preaches hate of the Zionist enemy- the Jews. The lessons upset and confuse Sero because his long-time neighbors are a lovable Jewish family. With a fine sense of humor and satire, the film depicts a childhood which manages to find light moments between dictatorship and dark drama. Little Sero gets involved in dangerous pranks with his friends, and dreams of having a television so he can finally watch cartoons. But he also experiences how the adults around him are increasingly crushed by the despotism, violence and nationalism which surround them. The film was inspired by the director’s personal experiences, and so his bitter-sweet memories connect the ongoing Syrian tragedy to the present.
