• 1980년대, 12살 소녀 캐서린은 네덜란드 남부, 제일란트에서 엄격한 개신교도 가정에서 성장한다. 남자 형제만 여섯인 탓에 캐서린은 집안일에 있어서도, 가족들이 나누는 일상적인 대화에서도 소외되기 일쑤다. 이에 캐서린은 종교적 가르침에서는 허락되지 않았던 성경 속 이야기나 소문들, 심지어 동화 속 이야기들로 도망쳐 상상의 나래를 펼친다. 캐서린에겐 독서와 공부만이 일상을 초월해 상상의 세계로 탈주할 수 있는 유일한 방법이다. 결국 오빠 결혼식 날, 문학에 빠져 가족들을 난처하게 만들어버린 캐서린은 자신의 어린 시절을 뒤로 하고, 자신이 원했던 삶을 찾기 위해 떠나간다.

  
  Set in the eighties, young Catherine (12) grows up in a strict protestant farming family in Zeeland, the south of Holland. As the only girl among six brothers, she is hardly involved in daily work and feels left out of the day-to-day conversations at the dining table. She lets her fantasy run wild by Bible stories, gossip and even fairy tales, though these are not allowed as they keep her away from the Truth. However, for her reading and learning are the only ways to transcend her daily life. Finally, during her brother’s wedding, she literally overwhelms her family with literature, leaving her childhood behind, ready to become who she wants to be.
