  2010년, UN에서 일하는 옌스 크리스텐센은 200년 만에 찾아온 최악의 아이티 지진이 일어나던 당시 사무실에서 일을 하고 있었다. 그는 스테이플러로 소리를 내서 5일 만에 극적으로 구조되었다. 그는 3일 동안 사경을 헤매다가 제정신을 차릴 수 있었다. 지진은 일주일 동안 무려 35번 넘게 여진이 계속 되었다. 옌스 크리스텐센은 병원에서 이틀 만에 퇴원하여 다른 생존자를 구하기로 결심하였다.

  Synopsis
  Jens Kristensen, a high ranking U.N. officier was working at his desk during the 2010 Haitian earthquake, the deadliest of the last two centuries. He was found after five days and five nights via the sound of a stapler. After the third day he became enable to recognize if he was asleep or awake. In the first week after the main quake more than 35 aftershocks had been registered. After just two days in the hospital Jens Kristensen decided to go back and help other survivors.

  작품소개
  작품은 지난 2010년 수많은 죽음을 초래한 아이티 지진 때 실제로 건물잔해에 묻혀 있던 한 남자의 이야기다. 지진 때문에 건물이 깔린 사람이 있다. 이 사람이 구조될 것인가 아니면 이대로 파묻혀 죽을 것인가라는 두 가지의 가능성을 가진 이야기 자체 보다 오히려 영상과 음향을 통해 이야기를 표현하는 연출력이 돋보인 작품이다. 특히 촬영에 있어서 화면을 채우는 어두운 조명과 인물에 대한 극단적인 클로즈업은 감독이 작품제작에 있어 영감의 원천이었다고 언급했던 프란시스 베이컨의 초상화에 나오는 기괴한 인물의 모습을 연상시키며 주인공의 심장 박동이 고스란히 관객에게 전달되다가 급기야 인물과 관객이 동시에 같은 리듬으로 숨을 쉬게 한다. 음향은 이런 영상의 밀도를 더욱 무겁게 하는데 화면의 사방을 채우는 크고 작은 소리와 소음들은 화면을 수축 또는 증폭시켜 관객의 시야를 제한하고 심장을 옥죈다. 내용에 앞선 정서 즉 인물이 느꼈을 한 치 앞을 볼 수 없는 답답한 외부 상황과 현실인지 환상인지 구분할 수 없는 혼미한 인물의 정신 상태를 효과적으로 표현하고 느끼게 하는 감정적이기 보다는 감각적 영화다.

  About Film
  This film is based on a man’s real story during the 2010 Haitian earthquake, the deadliest one. He is under the crushed building and the story is about whether he could be rescued or not. Directing to express this story through images and sound is stunning. In particular, dark lighting filling out the whole screen and extreme close-ups remind bizarre figures in the Francis Bacon’s portraits, which has inspired this film. The main character’s heartbeat can be felt by this film’s audiences and hence make them breathe in the same rhythm. Sound in this film makes the density of images heavier and large and small noises contract or amplify the screen limiting audiences’ view and making them nervous.  This film is sensual rather than emotional, as it shows chaotic mental state of the main character which is unable to tell the reality from illusion.

  지오바니 판토니 모데나 Giovanni Fantoni Modena
  1984년에 출생한 지오바니 판토니 모데나 감독은 이탈리아 밀라노에서 역사 철학과를 전공하고, 싱가폴에 있는 뉴욕대학교 티쉬 예술학교 에서 영화연출 전공 졸업을 앞두고 있다. 그가 각본과 연출을 맡은 다수의 단편영화들은 여러 국제영화제에서 상영되었으며, 뉴욕대학교 티쉬 예술학교 재학 중에 ‘렉서스(Lexus)’ 와 ‘에넬(Enel)'과 같은 기업 광고들을 만들기도 했다. 현재 그는 첫 번째 장편영화의 프리프로덕션에 매진하고 있다. 그의 작품은 전통적인 영화제작과 강한 시각적 실험 사이를 넘나들고 있다.

  Giovanni Fantoni Modena was born in Milan in 1984.
He graduated in Philosophy of History in Milan and he is about to graduate in Film Directing at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts in Singapore. He wrote and directed several short films screened in many International film festivals and during his studies at NYU Tisch he had the opportunity to direct commercials for clients such as Lexus and Enel. He’s currently in the pre-production of his first feature length film. All his works lie at the boundary between classic filmmaking and strong visual experimentation.

  일본의 한 마을에 사는 노부부는 빗자루를 만들어 생계를 이어가고 있다. 노부부는 오랜 시간동안 함께 일하며 삶을 보내왔다. 그러나 최근 들어 남편은 아내의 건강이 악화되어 함께 일하기 어렵다는 사실을 알게 된다.

  An old couple live in a Japanese village. They make brooms for living. They have been together for life and work for a long time. Recently the husband noticed the wife has had some symptoms of the disease, which caused some obstacles in their work.

  감독의 삶을 바라보는 담담한 시선이 전통적인 방식인 종이 위에 그림을 그리는 2차원의 애니메이션이 아닌 그렇다고 할리우드의 최첨단 3D도 아닌 나무, 찰흙, 플라스틱과 같은 인간의 삶 주변의 재료로 만드는 인형 애니메이션이라는 특별한 3차원의 표현방식을 통해 잘 표현된 작품이다.

  Director’s calm perspective to the life is shown with special 3D expression methods in an animation format. It is quite different from Hollywood’s high-tech 3D, not to mention the traditional 2D drawn on a paper. This film is a puppet animation made of wood, clay and plastic, which are common in human life.

  1987년 일본에서 출생한 츠게하타 아야 감독은 2010년 일본 타마 예술대학에서 정보디자인과를 졸업했다. 2012년 도쿄 예술대학에서 영화·뉴미디어 전공과정을 마쳤다.

  Born in Japan, 1987. In 2010, graduated at Tama Art University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine arts, Department of Information Design. In 2012, graduated at the Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts.

  A lot of people are obsessed with their mobile phones these days. They are often stuck to the phones even on their vacation. We wanted them to be free from their phones. “If you are exhausted, just leave.  Stop thinking work!”
  

  작품소개
  스마트폰 때문에 가족 간의 소통이 부재하다는 내용을 가족 여행을 모티프로 다루고 있다. 가족 모두의 스마트폰을 쓸 수 없게 만드는 뜻밖의 사건, 이후 가족 간의 소통이 다시금 생겨나는 모습을 에필로그로 처리한 연출이 재기발랄하다. 한국, 필리핀, 태국, 싱가포르, 미얀마, 브루나이 등 아시아 11개국 22명의 젊은 영화인들이 참여하고, 부산영상위원회가 중심이 되어 필리핀영화개발위원회와 아시아영상위원회 네트워크(AFCNet)가 공동 주최한 아시아 공동제작 프로젝트인 'FLY 2012 (ASEAN-ROK Film Leaders Incubator)’의 작품으로 아시아 영화의 젊은 시선을 느낄 수 있다

  About Film
  Its motif is a family trip but talking about the absence of family communication because of smart phone. Family members cannot use their smart phones owing to an unexpected incidence and the epilogue shows they communicate each other again, letting us know the director's sparkling wit. This film was made as a part of a project 'FLY2012(ASEAN-ROK Film Leaders Incubator)', which was jointly organized by Busan Film Commission, Philippines Film Development Council, and Asian Film Commissions Network(AFCNet) and 22 young filmmakers participated from 11 countries including Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Brunei, etc.

  2012년, 아시아 11개국 출신22명의 젊은 영화인들이 필리핀 다바오에서 2개 조로 나뉘어 2 편의 영화를 제작하였다. <이스케이프>는 FLY2012에서 만든 영화 중 하나로 감독 4인, 촬영감독 4인, 제작1인, 사운드 1인 그리고 편집 1인이 참여했다. 본 작품은 이서현 외 젊은 아시아 감독들에게 첫 번째 합작 작품이며 이들은 지속적으로 영화에 대해 의견을 나누고 유대 관계를 맺고 있다.
  22 young filmmakers from 11 Asian countries were gathered in Davao, Philippines in November 2012. Escape is one of the two films made as a result of FLY2012. 4 directors, 4 directors of photography, 1 producer, 1 sound, and 1 editor participated in this film. It was the first co-production opportunity for these filmmakers; they continue to share ideas and maintain their friendship.

  히말라야의 작은 마을에 살고 있는 13살의 네팔 소녀는 도시에서 일자리를 찾기 위해 막역지우인 크리슈나와 마을을 떠나기로 결심한다. 그러나 그녀는 크리슈나가 국경을 넘어 인도로 같이 가자고 했을 때 뭔가 미심쩍은 것이 있을 것이라고 생각하고 조금씩 의심하기 시작한다. 인생의 갈림길에 서 있는 소녀는 가족과 크리슈나를 위해서 마지못해 자신을 희생한다.

  A 13-year-old Nepali girl leaves her Himalayan village seeking employment in the city with trusted friend Krishna, but becomes increasingly suspicious of his intentions when he asks her to cross the border with him to India. At a life-changing crossroads, she is forced to choose what she’s willing to sacrifice for the good of both her family, and him.

  구름에 싸인 거대하고 웅장한 히말라야를 보여주며 시작하는 영화 <용감한 소녀>는 집을 떠나는 소녀의 여행기다. 일반적으로 영화나 소설에서 주인공이 어려움에 처할 때 우리는 쉽게 예상할 수 있는 결말은 두 가지이다. 할리우드영화나 아이들의 동화처럼 주인공이 결국 구원을 받는 한 가지 결말과 리얼리즘영화나 느와르영화처럼 결국 주인공이 타락 혹은 파멸의 구렁텅이에 빠지는 또 다른 결말이 그것이다. 이 영화도 마찬가지다.
  우리는 위의 두 결말 중의 가능성 중에 하나를 예상하고 과연 어떻게 전개될지를 긴장된 마음으로 지켜보게 된다. 영화의 중반 소녀가 사창가로 보이는 거리에 도달한 순간은 막연히 품어왔던 불안함이 현실이 된 순간으로 낮에서 밤으로의 빠른 컷의 편집이 큰 효과를 주며 다음 컷들에 보이는 일부러 거칠게 촬영한 실제 사창가의 화면은 이전 신(Scene)들의 모든 불안함을 확인시키며 이후 벌어질 장면의 밀도를 증폭시킨다.
  마지막 장면에서 어린 소녀, 젊은 처녀 그리고 나이든 늙은 여자 포주까지 한 프레임 안에 있는 컷은 뫼비우스의 띠처럼 결코 헤어날 수 없는 악몽의 순환을 보게 되며 안타까움, 무기력함 나아가 분노를 통해 강한 파장을 일으킨다. 관객의 예상을 충족시켰든 배신했든 극의 결말이 우리의 마음을 찌르는 이유는 여전히 용감해야만 살 수 있는 많은 소녀들이 영화를 넘어 실제로 세상 어딘가에 있기 때문이다.

  About Film
  The huge and magnificent Himalaya shrouded in clouds is the first scene of . It is about a girl’s trip. When a main character of a film is in danger, we generally expect two kinds of ending. Hollywood or fairy tales’ style of happy ending vs. realism or noir movies’ sad ending, in which the character falls into the abyss of ruin. This film is the same. You will anticipate one of the two endings and watch to see how the story is unfolded. In the middle of this film, the prostitute quarters’ scene stands out with fast cut editing and roughly taken shots of the real prostitute quarter amplify the density of the scene. In the last scene, a little girl, a young woman, and an old female pimp are in the same frame. It looks like a Möbius strip which cannot be escaped. The reason the ending hurts is that this is not limited to the movies. It happens in the real world and many girls have to be brave to survive.

  에린 갈레이 Erin Galey  
  미국 펜실베이니아 피츠버그에서 성장. 브라운대학에서 문학을 전공했고 뉴욕대 Tisch School of the Arts Asia에서 석사학위 수료. Erin Galey감독은 네팔과 인도에서 올 로케이션한 성매매 사기꾼에 대한 단편 극영화인 <용감한 소녀>를 직접 제작, 시나리오, 감독까지 맡았다. 영화는 SXSW, 아틀란타 영화제, 버뮤다 영화제, 사라소타 영화제 등 많은 영화제에서 상영되었다. 2012년 First Run Film Festival에서는 시나리오와 프로듀싱 부문의 차점상을 받으며 대상 후보에 올랐다. 2013년에는 LA와 포트랜드를 중심으로 하는 IN THE FLICKER를 설립해서 광고, 브랜드 콘텐츠, 단편 내러티브 미디어를 제작하고 있다.
  Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Erin Galey studied Literature at Brown University. She completed her Master’s degree in Film and Television production at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia. Erin produced, wrote, and directed , a narrative short exploring the con artists of the sex trade, shot entirely on-location in both Nepal and India. The film has screened at numerous film festivals nationwide, including SXSW, Atlanta Film Festival, Bermuda Film Festival, and Sarasota Film Festival. The film was also a grand prize runner-up at the First Run Film Festival in 2012, earning supporting awards in screenwriting and producing. In 2013, Erin founded IN THE FLICKER, a Los Angeles/Portland based production company, specializing in commercials, branded content, and short form narrative media.

  작품소개
  영화의 제목 <로작>은 보통 칠리소스를 친 샐러드를 가리키는 단어로 말레이시아판 떡볶이라 할 수 있다. 한국에서는 ‘그녀는 예뻤다’에서 사용한 실사애니메이션인 애니그래픽스로 영화는 만들어졌다. 실사가 아닌 이미지는 말레이시아의 주민을 구성하는 말레이계, 인도계 그리고 중국계 사람들이 모두 비슷한 생김새를 풍기는 인상을 주어 감독이 말하고자 하는 서로 다르지만 또한 비슷한 사람들이 사는 말레이시아를 잘 형상화한다. 또한 재즈풍의 음악과 여러 소리들의 배경에 보이스오버로 나오는 말레이어가 마치 흥겨운 랩처럼 잘 어울려져 있다. 영화는 길거리에서 먹는 로작이 다채로운 재료가 들어간 음식이며 바로 다양한 사람들과 온갖 문화가 서로 어우러져 있는 혼란스럽지만 그 속에 나름의 질서가 있는 오늘의 말레이시아임을 말하고자 한다.
  About Film
  The title of this film Rojak is the name of a Malaysian salad dish with chilly source. This film is made using an ani-graphics, the same method used in a photorealistic Korean movie, ‘Life is cool’. The non-photorealistic images represent different but similar Malaysian people, composed of Malays, Indians, and Chinese. Also, the voice-over of Malay sounds like a rap mixed with Jazz and other noise. This film shows that today’s Malaysia, which has diverse peoples and cultures, is like Rojak, which has diverse ingredients and is easy to get on the street. But both have their own order.

  조단 슐레이만 Jordan Suleiman 무사딕 슐레이만 Mussadique Suleiman

  조단 슐레이만은 자신이 공동 설립한 종합 미디어 회사 ‘스튜디오 보셀’의 제작 책임자이며, 미디어 관련 프로덕션 영역을 포함한 모든 프로젝트를 총괄한다. 무사딕 슐레이만은 단편애니메이션을 제작했으며 단편영화 <로작>의 공동감독이자 작가이다. 단편영화 <로작>은 2010년 클레르몽페랑 국제단편영화제에서 국제경쟁 부문에 진출했으며 그 이외 9개 국제 영화제에 공식 초청되었다.

  Jordan Suleiman is the Creative Director of Studio Voxel, the company he co-founded and all-round media creator. Jordan conceptualises and directs all the projects encompasing a broad spectrum of media related production. Mussadique Suleiman has produced an animated short and was co-director and writer of the short film which he wrote. Short film was selected for the international competition at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival 2010 and was official selection for nine other international film festivals.

  고사리 같은 작은 손에 큰 지갑을 들고 도시의 이곳저곳을 헤매는 소년의 모습은 첨단의 물질문명이 꽃피운 일본에서 구석으로 내몰린 사람들을 대변한다. 이 영화는 외형적으로는 작은 공간에 촘촘히 어울려 살아가지만 내면적으로는 타인의 삶이나 어려움에 눈길조차 주지 않는 현대의 도시를 살아가는 일본인의 모습을 서툴지만 진지하게 어린 소년의 일상을 통해 말하고자 한다.

  햇빛이 조금씩 희미해지고, 어두운 그림자가 드리워진다. 방안에는 찬 공기가 감돈 채 평온히 잠들어 있는 중년 여성의 냄새와 숨소리가 맴돈다. 여행은 시작되고, 나는 그녀의 기억과 경험으로 가득한 잠재의식 속을 떠다닌다. 그러한 고통은 그녀 안에서 계속해서 반복된다. 내가 할 수 있는 것이라고는 그녀의 잠재의식을 계속 들여다보면서 모든 이야기가 끝나기만을 기다리는 것이다.
  Synopsis
  As the sunlight is slightly fading out, the shadow from the darkness spreads over the area. The cold air fills in the room. It senses the smell and sound of the breath of a middle age woman who is sleeping trancedly. The journey has started. I'm floating towards each parts of her subconscious that containing memories and experiences. Those pains are still circulating inside. The only thing I can do is to observe them and let the whole story finishing itself.

  이번 섹션 영화 중 실험영화란 타이틀을 단 유일한 작품으로 관객은 논리적인 내러티브를 찾기 보다는 눈과 귀를 열어 화면과 사운드에 몸을 맡기며 뇌리에 불러일으키는 것들을 느끼는 경험을 하게 될 것이다. 영화는 한 늙은 여자의 꿈속으로 들어갔다가 빠져 나오는 꿈의 여정이며 그 꿈을 형상화한 카메라의 움직임이 존재감을 보인다. 사운드는 기존의 실험영화의 익숙한 방식인 대사나 음악을 배제한 방식으로 구성되었다. 창문, 커튼, 시계와 같은 상징과 여자를 구성하는 물건들을 계속적으로 제시하면서 꿈을 통해 그녀의 가장 깊은 곳을 살피는 정서적 경험을 하게 하는 영화다.
  About Film
  This is the only experimental film in this section. Rather to try to find out narrative, audiences should open their eyes and ears to the screen and sound to experience those things their mind arouses. The movie is about the journey of an old woman’s dream and you can see the camera’s movement which embodies her dream. Sound effect breaks from the conventional method consisting of dialogue and background music. Symbols such as windows, curtains, and clocks and stuff belonging to the woman continuously appear. You can experience deep emotion of the woman through her dream.

  와따나푸메 라이수완차이는 태국출신의 젊은 영화감독이자 뮤직비디오 감독 겸 시각 예술가이다. 1988년 태국 방콕에서 출생하였으며, 시각디자인을 전공했다. 그의 단편영화 작품들은 전 세계의 여러 국제영화제와 박물관에서 널리 상영되었다. 그에게 영화는 현대 사회에서의 기억, 시간, 관계, 자아와의 연결을 탐구하는데 있어 표현과 의사전달력의 측면에서 가장 유용한 수단이다. 그는 새로운 영화 제작과 구조적, 형식적 가능성을 위해 다양한 종류의 매체들을 실험하고 결합하기 위해 탐구의 재료들을 세심히 관찰한다.
  Wattanapume Laisuwanchai is a young Thai filmmaker, Music video director and visual artist. He was born in 1988 in Bangkok, Thailand and holds the Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from the communication design program. Although he has made a few short films, his work is widely shown in international film festivals and museums around the world. Wattanapume is interested in the film medium by means of its communicative and expressive power to explore the idea of memory, time, relationship, and self-connection to contemporary society. He delicately observes his research materials in order to experiment and combine various kind of mediums into finding a potential, a new way of making a film structure and form.
