  부산에서 다큐멘터리 활동을 이어나가고 있는 김지곤 감독의 <음악을 한다>는 음악 도시 대구의 발자취를 따라가는 다큐멘터리 영화다. 김지곤에게 음악은 그리 낯설지 않은 작업이다. 그는 이전에도 음악과 관련한 다큐멘터리를 찍어왔는데, 그가 영화에서 다루는 음악은 음악 그 자체보다는 음악을 둘러싸고 향유하는 인물들이나 공간, 공동체에게 카메라를 돌리는 방식을 취한다. <음악을 한다>는 대구에서 음악을 기록하고 향유하며 보존하는 인물들을 바라보면서 ‘음악을 한다’는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 되묻는다. 질문은 자연스레 지역 예술에 대한 의미로 전이되고, 그렇게 대구와 부산은 연결된다. 각자의 예술에서 필수적인 요소, 음악의 ‘음’과 영화의 ‘빛’의 경계를 오가면서.

  is a documentary film that follows the footsteps of Daegu, the music city. Music is not a very unfamiliar topic for Kim Jigon. He has filmed documentaries related to music before. However, the music he deals with in his films takes a way of turning the camera to the people, spaces, and communities surrounding and enjoying the music rather than the music itself. The question is naturally transformed to the meaning of the local art, and thus Daegu and Busan are connected. Moving back and forth between the 'sound' of music and the 'light' of film, an essential element in each of their art.

  일직선인 우리의 삶 속에서 만남과 헤어짐은 우리의 움직임에 의해 일어나는 것이 아닐까.

  
  

   

  
  

  The tram travels, sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly, through the city center, searching for something. The stories of each person, about the lives they have lived and the lives they will live unfold upon the screen. In the straight lines of our lives, perhaps it is our movements that cause meeting and parting.

  눈 덮인 삿포로를 배경으로, 정해진 길을 통해 움직이는 전차와 횡단보도 위에서 동일한 방향으로 움직이는 사람들이 보인다. 그리고 그 위로 주인공들의 이야기가 포개진다. 각자의 과거와 현재, 앞으로의 삶에 대한 이야기들이 흐트러지면서 영화는 그야말로 제목처럼 길 위에서 묻는 것만 같다. 영화에서 인터뷰하는 두 주인공의 관계는 불분명하다. 아니 단절되어있다고 보는 편이 맞다. 그러나 ‘길 위에서의 물음’이라는 측면에서 본다면 이처럼 적확한 표현이 있을까. 직선의 길 선상에서, 예기치 않게 나타나는 서로 다른 인연과 만남이 있고 나서야 비로소 우리는 질문할 수 있게 되니 말이다. 반복된 일상 속에서 우리는 만남과 헤어짐 역시 반복한다. 그렇기에 같은 듯 다른, ‘다중 노출’된 나를 만날 수 있게 되는 것은 아닐까.

  With a snow-covered Sapporo in the background, you can see a tram moving through a set path and people moving in the same direction on a crosswalk. And above all this, the story of our main characters are laid. As the stories of each person’s past, present, and future are scattered, the movie seems to ask about life on the line as the title suggests. The relationship of the two interviewees are undefined. No, it's better to see it as disconnected. However, in terms of ‘life on the line,’ could there be a more accurate expression? Only after encountering unexpectedly different relationships and encounters upon the straight line, can we ask those questions. In our repetitive daily life, we too continue meeting and parting. Perhaps it will be possible to meet the same, but also different, ‘multiple exposure’ version of us.
