  에드워드 콜스턴의 동상을 철거하는 영상으로 시작하는 영화는 곧장 과거의 한 시점으로 보이는 장면으로 이동해 쫓기는 듯 보이는 한 흑인 여성을 보여준다. 에드워드 콜스턴은 17세기 영국의 대표적인 노예무역상으로 무려 8만여 명의 서아프리카인을 노예로 팔아넘긴 인물이다. 노예무역으로 축적한 부를 말년에 자신의 고향인 브리스톨에 기부하면서 브리스톨에 동상이 세워지기도 했는데, 2020년 흑인 조지 플로이드의 사망에 항의하는 시위대가 에드워드 콜스턴의 동상을 무너뜨린 것이다. <디나>는 과거와 현재의 교차를 통해 여전히 뿌리 깊게 남아 있는 인종 차별 문제를 다시 생각해볼 것을 강력히 권유한다.

  The film begins with a video of the demolition of the statue of Edward Colston and jumps straight to a scene in the past where a black woman seems to be being chased. Edward Colston was a representative slave trader in Britain in the 17th century who sold over 80,000 West Africans as slaves. In his later years, Colston donated the wealth he accrued from the slave trade to his hometown of Bristol, and a statue was erected in his honor. However, in 2020, protestors against the death of George Floyd demolished the statue of Edward Colston. The film strongly recommends we rethink the issue of racism that remains deeply rooted in society by intersecting the past and the present.

  티나와 율렉, 두 사람 사이에는 그들의 관계를 끈끈하게 결합하는 요소와 둘 사이를 한없이 멀어지게 만드는 요인이 동시에 존재한다. 두 사람이 우애 좋은 남매임은 더 말할 것도 없으며, 함께 음악 작업을 하고 있고, 그 작업이 좋은 결실을 보게 되어 곧 대형 음반 회사와 계약하게 된다고 한다면, 혹자는 더할 나위 없이 행복한 결말을 상상하게 될 것이다. 그런데 그런 둘 사이를 벌어지게 만드는 단 하나의 소이가 있다면 또 어떨까. 오빠인 율렉이 심각한 마약중독자라면. 티나는 이미 굳어질 대로 굳어진 오빠의 그릇된 습관을 제지하려 노력할 것이다. 어쩌면 바꿀 수 없는 일임을 알지라도, 그녀는 자신과 오빠 사이를 단단하게 묶고 있는 사랑과 같은 무언의 감정을 계속해서 소환하고 되뇔 것이다. 하지만 무릇 사람 간의 관계는 함께해야 할 수십 가지의 이유보다 같이 있기 못 견디게 만드는 하나의 까닭으로 결정지어지지 않던가. 극의 끝에 다다라서 망연자실한 티나의 표정을 보고 있자면, 그녀의 최종적인 결정에 납득이 되면서도, 결국은 씁쓸해지는 기분을 감출 수 없게 된다. 그저 그녀의 선택이 두 사람을 위한 최선의 것이기를 바랄 뿐이다.

  If a loving brother and sister are working together on music, their work pays off well, and they soon sign on with a big record company, most people will imagine a happy ending. But, what if there was one reason that separated the two? What if the brother is a severe drug addict? The little sister will try to restrain her brother’s already hardened bad habits. However, relationships between people aren’t determined by the dozens of reasons to stay together but by the one that makes it difficult to stay. Looking at Tina’s devastated expression at the end of the film, one can understand her decision but can’t help but feel a bitter feeling.   여기, 사회로부터 상처받은 한 남자가 있다. 빽빽이 들어선 건물, 자동차, 도시의 소음. 남자는 어딘지 모르게 위축된 모습으로 도시 위를 걷는다. 결국 외로운 그의 발걸음이 향한 곳은 숲이 울창한 야생이다. 고요하고 아늑한 숲 한가운데서 남자는 작살을 만들고, 물고기를 잡고, 불을 지핀다. 그런 그에게 찾아온 새끼 뱀 한 마리. 남자는 도대체 어떤 결의에 차서 새끼 뱀을 데리고 다시 도시로 걸어 들어간 것일까. 이미 도시는 허물고, 버리고, 새로운 것을 만드는 데 도가 터서 남자와 새끼 뱀을 환영해주지 못할 텐데 말이다. <뱀>은 밀려나고, 버려지고, 소외된 것들의 외로움을 정직하게 포착하는 애니메이션이다. 연필로 거칠게 그린 듯한 그림들은 남자와 새끼 뱀의 처연한 움직임을 그 어떤 번번한 효과를 쓴 것보다 사실적으로 표현해낸다. 마케도니아 애니메이션 영화 제작사 ‘플립북’ 은 <뱀>을 통해 차가운 사회의 일면을 그림과 동시에 그 속에서 잊혀가는 존재들을 조명하는 데 성공한다.

  Here, here is a man hurt by society. Densely packed buildings, cars, and the bustling noise of the city. The man walks the city, looking somewhat daunted. In the end, his lonely footsteps head to the forested wilderness. In the middle of the quiet and cozy forest, the man makes harpoons, catches fish, and lights a fire. There, a baby snake comes to him. The movie honestly captures the loneliness of things that are marginalized, abandoned, and left out. The drawings, which seem as if they were drawn roughly by a pencil, represent the mournful movements of the man and the baby snake more realistically than any other effect. The film succeeds in painting a picture of a frigid facet of society and illuminating the forgotten beings in it.

  어쩌면 슬픔으로부터 놓여나는 최고의 방법은 그 끈덕진 감정 속에 빠져 허우적대는 것일지도 모른다. 기어이 벗어나지 못한다고 해도, 그것은 환희로 가득 차 들뜬 기분 이상의 찬란한 순간을 선사한다. 그리고 영화 속 여자는 헤어진 남자의 집 앞에 서 있다. 남자는 집을 처분하려는 듯 보이고, 여자는 초조한 얼굴로 숨어있다 이내 그 집에 몰래 들어가고 만다. 집 안 곳곳에 서려 있는 여자와 남자, 둘만의 행복한 기억들. 한때 두 사람은 집 안 욕조에서 함께 목욕했었다. 웃음 가득한 둘만의 대화 속, 여자는 욕조 바깥으로 넘치는 물을 보고 이걸 누가 치울 거냐며 걱정한다. 이젠 여자 혼자 욕조에 물을 받고 있다. 욕조의 물은 차고 넘쳐서 화장실 바닥으로, 방 안으로, 집 밖으로 흘러내린다. 여자는 거품 가득한 욕조에 몸을 푹 담그고 그곳에서 한참을 허우적거린다. 넘쳐흐르는 물은 그녀의 몸짓을 막지 못한다. 영화가 끝나고 크레딧이 다 오를 때까지 들려오는 물소리를 듣고 있으면, 언젠가 그녀가 모종의 슬픔 속에서 벗어나게 되리라는 예감이 든다. 설사 그러지 못한다고 할지언정, 욕조에 몸을 담근 그 순간만큼은 평안하기를 바라는 마음으로.

  Perhaps the best way to escape sadness is to flounder in that emotion. Happy memories of the two, man and woman, linger all over the house. At one time, the two of them bathed together in the bathtub. In their conversation, full of laughter, the woman sees the water overflow from the bathtub and worries about who will clean it up. Now, the woman is alone, filling the tub. The water overflows from the tub, into the room, and out of the house. The woman soaks herself in the bubble-filled batch and flounders there for a long time. The deluge of water cannot stop her movements. Listening to the sound of the water that rings even when the movie is over, and the credits roll, I get a hunch she will be freed from her sadness. And, even if she can’t be freed, I hope that for the brief moment she is in that tub, I hope she is at peace.

  대학 성악 교사인 저우 샹은 십여 년 전 원촨 지역에 지진이 발생하기 전까지 창 민족의 음악을 수집하고 있었다. 영화는 저우 샹이 지진으로 인해 중단되었던 작업을 재개하면서 창 민족을 찾아가 그들의 노래를 수집하고 녹음하는 작업 과정을 담아낸 다큐멘터리다. 영화는 그녀가 십여 년 전 기록했던 영상을 활용하기도 하고 그들의 노랫말을 자막을 활용해 제시하는 등 저우 샹의 여정을 충실히 따라간다. 누군가 기록하지 않으면 창 민족의 음악이 사라져버릴지도 모른다는 저우 샹의 우려대로 이미 많은 노인이 십 년 동안 세상을 떠났다. 그런 의미에서 영화는 저우 샹을 기록하는 동시에 창 민족의 모습을 기록하는 귀중한 자료가 되기도 할 것이다.

  Zhou Xiang, a university vocal music professor, collected Chiang ethnic music until the earthquake struck Wenchuan more than a decade ago. The film is a documentary about Zhou Xiang’s process of visiting the Chiang people to collect and record their songs as she resumes the work suspended due to the earthquake. The film faithfully follows Zhou Xiang’s journey by utilizing the footage she recorded more than a decade ago and presenting the lyrics of the Chiang people through subtitles. However, as Zhou Xiang feared that the Chiang people's music might fade into history if someone did not record it, many of the elderly had already passed away in the past ten years. In that sense, the film will be a valuable resource in how it is a record of the Chiang people as it documents Zhou Xiang.
