  찢어지게 가난한 발렌틴은 일자리를 찾아 나섰다가 지금은 쥐들이 들끓어 폐허가 된 한 도시에 당도하게 된다. 도착한 지 얼마 지나지 않아 쥐들은 다 사라졌는데 바로 마법사 암브로시우스의 힘 덕분이었다. 암브로시우스는 마침 견습생을 찾고 있는 중이었다. 하지만 입학시험에서 발렌틴은 영악한 경쟁자 카트리나에게 속아 상냥한 약사 자카리우스와 지내게 된다.

  
  

   

  
  

  In search of work, destitute Valentin arrives in a town that is currently ravaged by a plague of rats. Shortly afterwards, all the rats have disappeared – through the power of Ambrosius the magician. By chance, he is looking for an apprentice.
