• 낙오자 Bydlo 

  패트릭 부샤드 /2012/ Canada/ 8'55"/ 19세 /DCP 

  비가 오는 새벽. 뼈대뿐인 수레. 빗물이 땅에 떨어지자 진흙 땅 속에서 소생한 소가 수레를 몰고 힘겹게 발을 내딛는다. 가혹한 운명과 냉정한 시간의 수레바퀴를 상징하는 듯한 수레는 단테의 ‘신곡’에서 나오는 지옥으로 우리를 인도하는 듯 하다. 러시아의 작곡가 모데스트 무소륵스키의 총 10곡으로 이루어진 피아노 곡 ‘전람회의 그림’ 중 4번째 곡인 커다란 바퀴가 달린 폴란드의 소달구지를 가리키는 비들로에서 영감을 받은 클레이 애니메이션 작품이다. (이상훈)

   

  나이트 메이어 Night Mayor

   가이 매딘/ 2009/ Canada /10' /19세/ DCP 

  1993년 캐나다의 위니펙에서 살던 보스니아 출신의 발명가 니하드 아데미는 북극광을 동력원으로 이용하여 캐나다에 관련된 영상들을 국토의 곳곳에 송출한다. 20세기 초의 무성영화 특히 독일 표현주의 공포영화를 연상시키는 거친 표면의 흑백화면과 이미지의 중첩 그리고 영화 속 기구들과 장소들은 우리를 가상의 인물인 니하드의 몽상 속으로 끌고 간다. 장편은 물론 전위적 무성영화 형식의 단편영화를 만드는 가이 매딘의 작품이다. (이상훈)

   

   

  노아 Noah 패트릭 세더버그,

  월터 우드맨/ 2013/ Canada/ 17'/ 19세/ HD 

  컴퓨터를 켜면 세상과의 소통의 문이 열리고, 컴퓨터를 끄면 다시 그 문은 닫힌다. 페이스북, 스카이프, 유튜브, 포르노사이트 등을 통한 타인과의 소통은 찰나에 그치고 관계의 무게는 깃털처럼 가볍다. 불특정 다수에게 나를 의도적으로 노출하고, 동일한 존재인 나는 또한 은밀하게 주변사람들을 염탐한다. 세상은 점점 더 연결되는데 개인들은 점점 고독해지는 역설적 상황의 인터넷 시대에서 우리가 어떻게 살고 있는지에 대해 색다른 방식으로 접근한 영화로 놀랍게도 300달러의 저예산으로 제작된 영화다. (이상훈)

   

  잠재 속의 비밀번호 Subconscious Password

  찰스는 소음으로 가득한 클럽 안에서 우연히 친구를 만나게 된다. 어색한 재회의 인사 끝에 도대체 친구의 이름이 생각나지 않아 찰스의 머리 속은 복잡해진다. 맥주를 찾으러 간 친구가 오기 전에 반드시 이름을 기억해 내야 한다. 일상에서 일어날 수 있는 곤란한 상황을 극적으로 표현한 작품으로 애니메이션 장르를 이용해 상상력의 한계까지 탐구한다. 3D 애니메이션 실험의 선두주자로 아카데미 단편애니메이션 작품상을 수상한 바 있는 캐나다 대표 애니메이션 감독 크리스 랜드레스의 작품이다. (이상훈)

   

  진짜 재밌는 이야기 A Pretty Funny Story

  만사가 따분한 릭은 무미건조한 가족 저녁 식사 자리에서 아들에게 건강을 위해 브로콜리를 먹어야 한다고 훈계한 후 우연찮게 자신의 집 건너편에서 엉뚱한 것을 보게 된다. 민망하고 우스운 몸짓으로 춤을 추는 청년의 모습을 본 후 기분이 좋아진 릭은 자신이 본 것을 내일 직장에서 말 할 생각에 벌써부터 마음이 부풀어 오르지만 그가 바라는 대로 일이 되지 않을 것 같다. 놀랍고 충격적인 시나리오로 현대인의 삶을 바라본 블랙코미디영화. (이상훈)

   

  네버마인드 Nevermind

  길 위의 모텔. 한 여자가 자신의 졸업무도회가 있었던 시절, 너무나 아름다웠던 청춘의 순간을 회상한다. 가라앉은 그녀의 목소리가 이야기하는 과거의 격렬한 삶의 순간. 그때는 당시 시대의 아이콘이었던 가수 커트 코베인이 27세의 젊은 나이에 비극적으로 삶을 마감했던 때와 우연히 혹은 필연적으로 겹쳐있던 순간이다. 그녀가 그 다음의 시간은 오지 않을 것이라 믿었던 10대의 마지막 순간이었다. 커트 코베인의 2집 앨범 ‘네버마인드’와 동명의 제목을 가진 다큐멘터리 형식의 극영화로 지나간 청춘에 대한 향수의 영화다. (이상훈)

  패트릭 부샤드(Patrick Bouchard)
  Born in Saguenay in 1974, Patrick Bouchard studied at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, where he made his first film with puppets, Jean Leviériste (1998), as part of an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts. His first professional film, The Brainwashers (2002), a comic but chilling look at a musician tormented by his overactive imagination, won the Jutra Award for animated short film. Dehors novembre (2005), based on a song by Les Colocs, also won a Jutra and screened in competition in Annecy. He followed up with a third puppet film, Subservience (2007), about a society suffering from bourgeois selfishness and the foolish passivity of its servants. In 2007, as part of the festival Off-Courts de Trouville, he made Talon d’argile, a very short film that was completed in 24 hours and features clay figures that constantly mutate. This experience inspired Bydlo, which uses Plastiline modelling clay.

  

  가이 매딘(Guy Maddin)
  Guy Maddin was born in Winnipeg approximately twenty years after the creation of the National Film Board of Canada. He began making films in the late 1980s, earning recognition for such unique cult items as Tales from the Gimli Hospital, Archangel and Careful. Maddin has directed countless short and feature productions, including the renowned short film The Heart of the World, a feature-length extravaganza starring Isabella Rossellini called The Saddest Music in the World and, more recently, the acclaimed My Winnipeg and his first picture for the National Film Board of Canada, Night Mayor. Maddin also teaches film at the University of Manitoba and is that institution’s Distinguished Artist in Residence. The director’s style is difficult to pin down — melodrama, horror, comedy and documentary have all shown themselves in his work; but the end product is always, and can only be, a Guy Maddin film. There is simply no other word for the genre.

  Evan Morgan is a Toronto based writer/director, and recent graduate of the Film and Video Production program at York University. His short comedy ‘The Pedestrian Jar’ (2011) premiered at TIFF last fall, and has since played festivals across the U.S. and Canada. He is also the co-writer /producer / editor of ‘The Dirties’ (2012), a feature length mockumentary currently in post-production.   쟝 마크 이. 루와(Jean-Marc E. Roy)
  Jean-Marc E. Roy’s work oscillates between documentary and fiction. Since 1999, many of his films have been presented and received awards here and abroad. His series Pickup : à la rencontre du bout du monde received a Gémaux Award in 2012 and Cowboy : un rêve canadien was nominated in 2014. He recently directed Blue Thunder (Official selection – 47th Directors Fortnight, Cannes 2015), Jupiter Applause, Puisqu’il le faut and Nevermind, which he accompanied around the world last year. An aficionado of French Canadian culture, Roy is currently working on his first feature-length documentary about director André Forcier.
